When was your last amazing sleep?

Uncategorized Apr 17, 2022

I mean, can you remember it? How did you wake up feeling?

Once I had kids, the first amazing sleep if I was blessed with a few in a row, I would actually often feel more tired. You know when your kid goes from waking every 2-3 hours to having a good chunk of sleep... and you somehow feel more tired those first few days?

I remember being amazed at how my body had adapted so perfectly to the lack of sleep, and was able to keep on going with all of the things in the day-to-day on seemingly nothing in the tank.

I wanted to share with you a little bit of info if you are naturally getting pretty good sleep, and then you have one of those shockers. You know the nights where you are tossing and turning all night long, and you wake up feeling like you've shot 10 tequila's and have to function again.

When I have one of those nights, I do a few things:

1. I move my body. I be gentle with myself, because I know I'm more likely to injure myself if I am tired, but movement is key to waking up my brain.

2. I eat a high protein brekky... but make sure there are some carbs in there.

3. I have a strong coffee (but I stick to one, because otherwise I'm riding the adrenal wave throughout the day). I then switch to black tea or herbals for the rest of the day. I also make sure to avoid alcohol that night, because this definitely impacts on my sleep quality, and begins the vicious cycle of terrible sleeps and bulk caffeine.

4. I try to have a natural sugars based morning snack - like a piece of fruit.

5. I drink all the water... like I'll go from my normal 2.4L sometimes up to 3L. I find ensuring my hydration helps.

6. I choose some joy. I play my fave music, and hug the kids a little harder.

7. I prioritise a nap. Either a quick little middle of the day one, or a 20 second eye shut if I'm at my desk.

8. I decrease my load on myself. If I have a lot to do, I have a look and see what can I flick off the list, or delegate to somebody else. There are no badges for superheroes - give yourself the grace to rest a little more.

9. Go to bed earlier. It's that simple.

What do you do on those days? I bet there are some of these that you do unintentionally... and a few others that might be new to you.

In the Working Mama Reset we discuss this kind of thing in depth, and a bit of the how too behind the scenes aswell.

Be kind to yourself. You matter, so much more than you think you do.

Much mama love,

Ali.
